Work-life Balance, is There Really Such a Thing?

I’m sitting here watching everyone watch me. Yes, we are a group of watchers listening, and watching after hours for the fourth time this month. There are no smiles, children are being bounced on laps, and someone just asked a question that will extend this session an additional hour. REALLY!!!!!!

I’m tired and hungry, well honestly I’m just mad because I had plans and now I have to set them aside to continue reviewing topics that have been covered over and over again. Why did I agree to this meeting? Was it based on the need to be a “team player” or am I afraid to set boundaries with my employer? How would I even broach this topic without sounding offensive? Let’s take a look at few tips to balance the work-life scale.

Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries (did I mention boundaries?)

There is nothing wrong with setting expectations with your employer. Granted, it is much easier to do so when being interviewed for your current role but often times intentions are lost when trying to snag the job. So, you carryon with a disgruntled disposition because you failed to consider yourself.

Stop, take time to reassess and be honest with your employer about what you can mentally and physically handle outside of what you are paid a fair wage to do. There is nothing wrong with going above and beyond but that should not be to the detriment you and your family.

I didn’t have a “Sugar” giving me words of wisdom so I let my “Pinky and the Brain” mentality rule over the need to to set boundaries. My children suffered because of my over achiever work ethic. Hindsight is definitely 20/20.

You have vacation days for a reason

This is an age old mistake so I’m gonna keep it simple…. DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE A PLANNED VACATION TO USE YOUR VACATION DAYS! Take off just because… sometimes mental breaks are needed.

Log the F$@K off (excuse the language, it’s tight but it’s right)

Simple, log off. If you have a schedule and you are not required to work any overtime or potentially finishing up a quick task, log off. Those that have salaried roles (such as myself) guess what- LOG OFF! If you went on into glory today, your position would be back filled and posted before your memorial service. I’ve said it before and I will say it again… This is not your Father’s company!!! Do your job, go above and beyond when required but again… not to the detriment of you and your family.

Don’t misunderstand, I am passionate about my role and take extreme pride in my work. I earned my position but it does not negate my need to recover and spend quality time with those that I love. Do yourself and family a favor take time to enjoy what you have accomplished, after all, you can’t take it with you after they have worked you into the grave… I’m just saying.

I hope you’ve enjoyed your view into the mind of Sugar Clark!

Be Blessed!
